Today I want to talk about music, specifically how music makes people resonate together. The essence of the practice of yoga is to yoke body/mind/spirit individually on our way to understanding the way we belong to the entire universe. And whether we think of it as yoga or not, music is an incredible way of doing this. I’ve had some profound connections with other people as we play music together. While we are playing together it feels like I can truly read their mind. You can easily feel this connection with old cats who have been playing together for decades.
Everything in the Universe resonates. Everything is frequency from colors to sounds to ideas. When something is vibeing similarly to the way you are tuned, you tend to naturally vibe in tandem. When someone says something that resonates, when you see a movie that moves you, or when you finish your friend’s sentences, you are experiencing sympathetic vibration. In the world of sound and physics it’s called sympathetic vibration. I wrote about this more in depth in my blog post Freaky Twin Connection. Essentially a practical explanation of sympathetic vibration goes like this . . . When I play an E on my sax, then take my sax out of my mouth, the E on the guitar in the same room has begun to vibrate because it’s tuned to the same frequency. It hears the same vibration and sings the same note like a ghost playing in the room. Freaky cool!
Yoga is a disciplined way of tuning ourselves to experiencing those sympathetic vibrations. We do this by cleansing and strengthening the body, by stilling the mind, and by learning how to fiercely listen and feel with all of our faculties. Imagine your life is a path that is constantly revealing itself to you. And as you learn to listen, all you have to do in life is move toward whatever is singing your song.
This week I invite you to practice listening to that which truly moves you and bravely move in that direction.
My dear friend, John Louviere, the guy who wrote as a guest for my blog, 10% More Relaxed, is an incredible singer/songwriter. THIS SATURDAY from 1-2:30 pm at Centered City Yoga we are going to create some sympathetic vibrations by combining fantastic music and a gentle flow yoga class. Come and feel the magic of the MUSIC + YOGA vibe and share it with an amazing group of people.
Cost is $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
See you there!
